Lucky last on the birthday link up with Bluff Mountain and Crater Bluff - 15 hours and 55 minutes car to car. Also better than I remembered. We managed to find the base in the light which was nice as the scrambling was more involved than I remembered. Climbed the whole route in the dark and then rapped down etc etc yay we are done. Walked back to the car and ate some left over pasta my dad had made. Then we got in the car and left. A fun 21 hours in the Warrumbungles with 3 hours of sleeping and 18 hours of walking, eating, faffing, and rock climbing. I always say birthdays are for suffering but this one was really just silly and fun. Thanks for skippin’ school Haz.

I got quite lost on the first pitch because i’m an idiot and ended up 15m below the abseil anchor with no rope left. Harry came up and sorted us out like the weapon he is. Simuled the rest of the route in about an hour twenty. We topped out, asked some walkers where the descent was, and then wandered down and made ourselves sandwiches.

Ground up over seven days and then we camped on top and hiked down on the eighth day. We pre-hauled to Hollow Flake Ledge, took two rest days, and then went up the route. Some nice Germans fixed the lines off Heart to above the Hollow Flake for us so we didn’t climb those pitches on our pre-hauling day and preserved our ground up as much as we could. We also didn’t do the Free Blast before our ground up attempt which was cool and definitely added to the experience. I top roped the Monster because I got tired of whipping from the move into it all the way back into the Ear in the dark at 5am and then gave the reigns to Jesse who fired it and then I followed. I top roped the Enduros because we didn’t do them first go and I also took the stance at the no hands ledge on the move off heart. These are my asterisks, do with them what you will.
I will probably write something more when my brain and body decide to work again. Best thing i’ve ever done! |

Brilliant route from James and Hugh! Deserves a whole lot more attention than it gets. With this, Harbinger, and La Niña, Boyce Town has some of the best under appreciated cracks in the mountains. Second go on the first pitch and then onsighted the upper two pitches linked together with Paul belaying on the ground. The first pitch is an amazing roof crack at about 24 that is unfortunately guarded by a pretty hard boulder off the ground (I do not know what grade it is). This should however not put you off! With one aid move or climbing in via a bolt to the left you can access the amazing upper crack which really is rad, or just do the move. The upper pitches are a bit shit and on shit bolts; either very old carrots or stainless bash ins. I wouldn’t really recommend bothering to do them. I didn’t enjoy the climbing and thought it was kinda dangerous; probably takes away from the quality of the first pitch. A much better thing to do would be to step right and finish up La Niña for sustained trad radness (or lower off). Because of rope drag and gear and general shitness and so I could rap clean the route, after pulling the steep section on the top pitch I climbed direct up the grey jugs instead of traversing left to the snappy orange rock for the last few metres. I think this makes the climbing less offensive and allows you to get to the tree belay on top in a way that means you can easily belay or rap. You can rap from this tree to the anchor at the top of the first pitch on a 70m.

One of the very best cracks in the mountains but I did not find it to be jugs. Seven days of effort, one some years ago and then recently three on TRS and three with partners. Thanks Paul for the send belay and Harry and Will for coming down on the other days to support. For the third pitch I did a long traverse right to meet up with Telstar placing no gear. It's a bit of a choose your own adventure up there but at least this way was easy...ish. Someone go do it and tell me what grade it is.

Mega mega mega! Definitely one to add to the trad canon. Started up Boisterous then stepped right at the ledge as per FA and pulled the rope up and dropped it back down at the stance for drag purposes. All the bolts had draws on them but I placed all the trad on red point except for the two fixed wires that I hung the draws on during the send. I could wax lyrical but you should just go do it instead. Second go.

Lee followed me up and I tried to onsight the second pitch but got scared and jumped off before getting to the bolt. Did it pretty easily second go though just clipping the bolts and then some gear on the face after. Lee led the ‘third and most significant pitch’ though so maybe i can’t claim the tick after all. With routes like this it’s no wonder Tobin was a believer.

A brilliant and very worthy mini tradventure. I fell off straight away at the start of pitch one, came down from the first piece of gear, ditched most of the rack because it weighed so much, and fired it off. Such a classic and quite feisty pitch, felt quite 23 honestly. Second pitch was a fun ramble, I broke off an enormous footer though and went for an unexpected and exciting one arm dangle. Pitch three is also great; a novel roof crack to start and pleasant layback to finish. Doubles (or triples!!) to 0.5 and singles above that seemed like a good rack. Wires were helpful too. Barely need any quickdraws, maybe four regular ones and two extenders for the roof on pitch three. You can also take one bolt bracket for the belay at the end of pitch two, but it probably isn't necessary. The bush bash off the top also wasn't too bad, definitely faster than trying to rap and walk out normally.

Rapped in, top roped the business to warm up, then rapped to the ground and did both pitches. The weather was truly superb and it turns out it's all actually pretty easy when you know where the foot holds are (especially now that the offwidth is clean). I also did a sick layback transition to hand jam flowz move above gear which pleased me greatly. I like rock climbing.

Tried for the mega pitch after doing the first pitch but peeled off at the last bolt on the onsight after grabbing a very sad handful of dirt instead of a hold. One off the life list. First go today. Fairly good but maybe not as classic as everyone says. I stopped at the first double bolts on pitch one so i could give Liz a better belay and because the next bit is kinda shit. We then climbed from here to the belay at the end of Masada as pitch two and from that belay to the top as pitch three. Seems like a good way to do it and means pitch two is the only average bit of climbing. Good value.

I placed all the gear on lead except for one semi-stuck and easy to place wire at the start, which was the compromise to allow for safely and efficiently cleaning the route each time. A very very good process. I think it could be 25 but also 27 depending on how tall/short you are and a whole bunch of other factors, so we’ll leave it at 26 until someone tells us otherwise. Radness! Climbed into the crux well above my gear, realised I had nothing else to put in, got scared, down climbed and sat. I climbed and aided my way to the top after this, gave it a top rope lap to figure out the gear a bit better and then sent it easily placing. Well worth it!

Went super easily today. Just one of the best routes in the style i've ever done. Amazing rock, slightly intimidating and great fun. Not nearly as spicy as it looks or it's reputation suggests so this should be on everyone's list for sure!!

Glorious grade 16 trad corner into rad stemming, laybacking and a punchy upper bit. An awesome climb. Worth bringing the three or four hand sized cams down to do it for sure!

Cleaning up an old dog. This was my first multipitch back when I was about 11 or 12 so it was good to properly tick it off the trad list. Pretty nice but not very hard. A worthwhile warmup.

Climbed scarily on just the wires we had left in the bottom of our bags and Neils #2 cam. Really nice and obvious line and pretty clean. It might have been done previously but it didn't seem so. Did this because the line for Indian Pacific was long and I didn't want to get in the way of other's sendage attempts and i had big plans for the following day so I wanted to save some skin. The monorail looks so mega though, I'll definitely be back for it.

It's not every weekend that you get to climb four routes and accrue 15 guidebook stars. Redemption from the mega whip. It turns out that progressing logically through the grades is the key to sending harder routes and that jumping on a 23 (trad) when you have only climbed 18 (trad) is hard. A lovely and solid send in the light rain after drinking some tea to attempt to warm my partially frostbitten self. I still got stressed about falling off at a few key moves, and especially on the very top 5m or so that I hadn't climbed before (luckily here I found a non-existent crimp to absolutely ming on so all was okay), but generally it didn't seem to be in too much doubt. It also added further support to my theory that every trad route harder than 19 (or starting at 19 if you are in Tassie) but easier than 26 is approximately the same grade of "hard but doable", with slight variations depending on the year of the FA. I placed all the gear except for a blue wire in a semi-key placement that Harry whipped on and got very stuck, but this I was able to clip from a bomber fist jam and I even placed the quickdraw on it in the arbitrary interest of making sure I gained a bit of extra pump, so I don't think that made a difference. Ultra mega classic!!! "Grasshopper" you are in my sights!!

A bit of a depressing end of day lap which started wonderfully and saw me cruise the route in the finest style i think i ever have and ended with a stuck cam right at the very bottom. Stupid Trango cams. Neither Harry nor my belligerent desire to leave no piece behind could force it out of the crack. If anyone does retrieve it I would dearly love to see it again, if only to stare angrily at it for being a such an awful shape!

23 | ★★★ Wake of the Flood - with Jason Nguyen | 50m | ★★★ Classic | |||
Awesome all-trad route that gets shade from sun-up to sun-down and manages to pack all kinds of varied climbing into its three pitches. The chimney on the first pitch was way above my comfort level in that style and i struggled to generate even the most minor upwards momentum. I still dont know how i oozed my way up?? Pitch two (which i linked pitch one into) is also great with a nice steep hands section and its own perplexing chimney before the belay on the slab. Then the final pitch is radness and were it longer would be one of the best bits of crack in the mountains. I fell off on the onsight and then went up and down a bit figuring out the moves and preparing for a solid second go. Here my inner sport climber kicked in and i did all manner of crack gastoning and laybacking to get myself up this pitch, which is probably not too hard at the grade once you know what to do. It was then super awesome to see Jason smash it out for a full beta spray flash on second, once more proving that hiding beneath his sport climbing facade, a trad climbing monster is lying in wait, mostly quietly biding its time but occasionally springing forth and crushing cracks with the raw bouldering power of an endurance deprived bolt clipper. Thanks Paul for the descent bolts as they make life significantly easier!

This felt desperate. The start is nails and then the top is very slick. I came off after all the hard stuff slipping near the top. Probably not 21 but it felt hard for 19. Did it second shot.

Knocked this little number over this afternoon after flying into Launceston and charging up the hill with our stupidly heavy packs. Did three top rope laps to figure it out, two of them clean and then sent it on my first lead lap. Super fun but just not long enough to be classic or solid at the grade.

FFA. A lot of work to get this into a climbable state but it was totally worth it!! Weird and generally unpleasant wide start past the fern, that I promise ill remove, followed by an equally unpleasant mantle on to the vegetated ledge. Then comes the awesome and improbable rising traverse crack system that goes all the way to the top, including a section of unbelievable finger sized splitter crack. Super stoked to have done this first shot the day after getting home from a fairly intense two weeks in the Grampians and have Brad nearly sneak a clean second! We placed the anchor bolts before we started cleaning and used to tree to rap off etc. Might be tricky at the grade.

Ground up, onsight, all trad. Even though Brad hadn't been out in six months he still managed to provide a high quality adventure and plenty of rattling moments. Our climbing forebears would be proud! Great first pitch followed by less inspiring but gripping and adventurous climbing afterwards. A pretty ridiculous outing.
