Grade Route Gear style Quality
Sun 5th Mar 2023 - Waipari
Bete Noire Wall
19 Streetwise - with Jonno Rau Sport 15m, 6 Good
The least sustained of the three 19s. Short crux above the detached block.

Sat 11th Feb 2023 - Waipari
Bete Noire Wall
17 Easy Morning Rain - with Jonno Rau Sport 15m, 7 Good
Not bad. Low crux. On the softer side of 17.

Sat 2nd Jul 2022 - Whanganui Bay
Whekenui
19 Small Pocks - with Gareth Sport 9m Good
On the soft side of 19, unless the left arete isn't in.

Sun 22nd May 2022 - Mangorewa
Bush Wall
17 Gunpowder, Treason and Plot - with Gareth Sport 27m, 13 Good
Didn't extend enough below the block, some annoying rope drag resulted. Jonno politely gave way for me at the pumpy top. Managed to place a spanner instead of a draw to make it pumpier Possibly not the first time today either. Good route.

17 Popping Tags - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Average
A bit harder to read, a bit pumpier, less interesting.

17 The Chickenator - with Gareth Sport 20m, 9 Very Good
Arrived late after slow start and wet after slip in the stream. Great fun route, many good rests, more overhung than it looks.

Sat 7th May 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Owairaka Buttress
19 Crown Of Thistles Sport 20m, 5 Good
Neat off balance traverse in the middle, and it's not all over after that. Would benefit from a scrub.

Sat 16th Apr 2022 - Kawakawa Bay
The Point
19 Survival of the Fittest - with Greg, Gareth Sport 40m, 14 Very Good
Bloody good, highly recommended. Much cleaner than I was expecting too. An easy warmup cruise up most of Raw Umber lulls you into a false sense of security, then get your runout trousers on for the tricky arete crack (or take a couple of finger size cams). Then it's time for the main game, up the black-streaked corner. You can step across left to a good rest, but getting back right will be tricky if that's where you want to go. Spent a good long while figuring out how to keep moving up on the left and didn't want to leave the rest, but it's all there at the grade. Easier to the top, then best rap down is to the Raw Umber anchor.

Fri 15th Apr 2022 - Kawakawa Bay
Jungle Wall
18 Baloo - with Greg Sport 18m, 9 Average
Pretty straightforward and not worth a star in my opinion.

Sat 2nd Apr 2022 - Waipari
Animal Biscuit Valley Little Spurt Wall
19 Gnomalised - with Greg Sport 9m, 3 Average
Bottom felt a bit dicky, but as usual it's the small pockets that are good. Eases toward the top. Too short to be worth a star.

Sun 13th Mar 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Owairaka Buttress
20 Ka-ching - with Gareth Sport 28m, 16 Good
This is pretty cool, a long rising traverse with some thinking moments. Still a bit grubby and gritty, and some fragile holds. Didn't need quite that many bolts. When the dust settles it'll probably be 19 and 2 stars.

Sun 6th Mar 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Owairaka Buttress
18 Rock Back Billy - with Gareth Sport 12m, 4 Good
A couple of degrees cooler, some fun monkeying around down low. You could make it quite tricky by misreading it.

17 Fence Line - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Very Good
Bloody good! Reminiscent of something at Arapiles for the exposed traverse and free hanging rap, just a tad shorter.

Sat 5th Mar 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Owairaka Buttress
18 Winterlude - with Angela Hewlett, Colin Sport 23m, 10 Very Good
An absolute treat. Keeps you thinking right to the end. Definitely not 19.

Sun 20th Feb 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier
16 Fizzing At The Bung - with Gareth Sport 28m, 8 Good
Escaping the sun. This is bloody good, a great position on the arete, why have I never been on it? Would be 2 stars if a little cleaner. Had no guide, went too far right before the arete, wound up traversing left and clipping a bolt at my feet. If in doubt, go towards the arete. Bolts are hard to spot from below. Nice ramble up the arete at top.

17 Sweet As - with Gareth Sport 14m, 6 Good
This is to the right of Babs, and better.

Sat 15th Jan 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier
19 Exponential Decay - with Jonno Sport 13m, 4 Good
Or this. Fun past 1st bolt in overhang, then keeps you working for a bit.

18 Groove Thang - with Jonno Sport 12m, 3 Good
Can't remember ever being on this. Don't come off getting to first bolt.

Sun 5th Dec 2021 - Waipari
Bete Noire Wall
19 Time Flies - with Gareth, Anja Sport 20m, 5 Good
Reasonably grunty crux, nice airy arete. Thought possibly hard 18 but seems everyone disagrees with me on that, maybe just having a good day.

Fri 12th Nov 2021 - Waipari
Main Cliff
16 Serife - with Greer Sport 20m, 5 Good
Or this. Good moves up the arete. Came in from right at bottom but maybe you start up the crack/arete, dunno.

14 15 Al Fresco - with Greer Sport 20m, 5 Good
Don't think I've ever been on this. Hard start indeed (16), maybe the pockets had edges in the 90s. Might be a bit run out if 14 is your grade. But it's good.

Sat 3rd Jul 2021 - Wharepapa Rock
Slab City
14 Unknown 1 - with Jonno Sport 20m Average
Looks pretty dirty but plenty of pockets to stand in.

Sun 16th May 2021 - Pakeho
Main Crag
17 Huntaway - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 7 Very Good
High first bolt then some slightly grubby horizontals through the low overhang, then up into a great slightly overhung bridging fingerlock sequence. Really enjoyed this. Solid 17.

Sun 21st Mar 2021 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier
20 Oh My God Sport 12m, 4 Good
Never been on this. First bolt felt high, then just keep it going on smalL but not tiny stuff. A little overhung, good body position will help.

Sun 7th Feb 2021 - Gorge Road
Leonardo's Wall
18 Carrottophrena Sport 17m, 7 Average
Deserves no stars. Crimps and high-steps again. Not as good as Heart of Darkness, just harder but more repetitive and ultimately more boring. Got off just as the sun hit like a bomb. Lots of choss above these routes just waiting to come off, wear your helmet!

17 Heart of Darkness - with Grant Johnston Sport 25m, 10 Very Good
Pretty good, not just crimpy face climbing for a change.

Sat 6th Feb 2021 - Arawata Terrace
Lower Tier
16 Procrastination - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m, 4 Average
Made the first clip harder than it needed to be. It's all over after bolt 2.

Thu 4th Feb 2021 - Hospital Flat
Tombstone Boulders The Tombstone
17 Fingers Columbia - with Grant Johnston Sport 15m, 5 Good
Hardish start and balancy clipping, keeps you working.

Wed 3rd Feb 2021 - Gorge Road
Magnum Wall
18 Teen Wolf Sport 6m, 2 Good
Wouldn't be good if you came off above the second bolt. Strayed too far left, hand traversed right.

19 RD Sport 6m, 2 Good
Good short fun, some kind of slappy nonsense at the top arete.

Sun 31st Jan 2021 - Coronet Crag
Right Side
12 Mall Rats - with Grant Johnston Sport 10m, 4 Average
Ok I guess. Anchors a long way back, hangers only. Traffic noise makes this crag unpleasant.

Sun 31st Jan 2021 - Kingston
Christmas Wall
17 Shadows On My Face - with Grant Johnston Sport 26m, 9 Good
Quite good and absorbing for a face climb.

Sat 30th Jan 2021 - Arawata Terrace
Upper Tier
18 59 - with Grant Johnston Sport 14m, 7 Very Good
Bloody great! Slick right wall makes for some fun alternative moves. A bit of jamming goes a long way.

17 Priapism - with Grant Johnston Sport 18m, 5 Average
Meh, face climbing. Fun move right at the top.

Sun 24th Jan 2021 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden
15 Smurftastic - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 5 Good
This is pretty good at the grade, a fun move getting out of the overhang.

Wed 30th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Yacht Club
19 Hammerheads Bite Sport 15m, 6 Average
May have used a feature or two from Fuggin’ Jet Skis, but if those aren't in it's a bit bloody contrived. Frankly these are squeeze routes anyway, just one would have been better, and this also arguably retrobolts the trad line. Meh.

Mon 28th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden
16 Minions Rock Sport 20m, 7 Good
Some funky moves for the grade. Probably possible to make it quite hard if you read it wrong.

Sat 12th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden
20 Animal Farm - with Gareth, Wade Sport 20m, 9 Good
Some sharpish holds, need to keep moving.

Fri 27th Nov 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden
16 Alice In Wonderland - with Gareth Sport 20m, 7 Good
Flows really nicely, original crux quite fun. Then dropped G four bolts and badly burnt my fingertips. Ack.

Sat 21st Nov 2020 - Wharepapa Rock
Upper Tier
17 Cosmic Shiva - with Jonno, Greer Sport 10m, 3 Good
Also a bit off route left above bolt 1. Tired and not thinking well.

17 Lycra Rainbow (Sanitize Review) - with Jonno, Greer Sport 10m, 3 Average
Probably a bit off route left at bottom.

Sun 25th Oct 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden
20 Korimako - with Grant Johnston Sport 25m, 11 Very Good
Claiming onsight for the slab (previously onsighted the top on gear out of Lolly Scramble), with no use of the LH crack. Balancy, mono stack fingers and tiny feet. I rather like it.

17 The Mad Hatter - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 10 Good
Damp after rain and high humidity made it feel more like 18. Fun route with undercling traverse.

Sun 4th Oct 2020 - Frog Pond
Main Cliff
17 Sweet Araceli - with Jonno, Greer Sport 15m, 6 Very Good
Easier than it looks. Had a peek around the corner at the trad line ... hmmm. Watch out for the nasty ongaonga nettle bush left of the start.

Wed 11th Mar 2020 - Maungarei Springs
Right Corner Wall
18 Gorse of the Gods - with Angela Hewlett Sport 9m, 4 Good
Bouldery start, the low bolt is not at all silly. The weetbix out right is sufficiently disturbing. Softish 18.

Mon 24th Feb 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
16 Marshmellow - with Gareth Hall Sport 20m, 6 Average
Grubby start. There's more gear than bolts, and that will make it more fun. Must return for a greenpoint.

Wed 22nd Jan 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
10 My Little Pony - with Rosie Sport 6m Don't Bother
Meh. Setting up short top rope for Rosie.

Sat 4th Jan 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Cracks Wall
20 The Skink Prince (of Bel Air) Sport 15m, 8 Good
Pleased to get this, spent a lot of time balanced on my toes working out the moves on the top slab. Similar in feel and difficulty to the top crux of Great Scott.

Sat 23rd Nov 2019 - Kawakawa Bay
The Point
18 Human Intervention - with Grant Johnston Sport 28m, 9 Very Good
Really nice route with a thoughtful crux around 2/3 height, easier up until then.

Thu 14th Nov 2019 - Sheridan Hills
Flying Cow Buttress
15 Keep Left - with Gareth Hall Sport 15m, 10 Average
There are actually 10 (!) bolts not 6. Ran out of draws.

Sun 15th Sep 2019 - Wharepapa Rock
Bumbly's Buttress
14 Rok It To The Moon - with Angela Hewlett, Colin Sport 23m, 5 Very Good
Really really good, a fun exposed sequence out to the arete. Apologies to nesting pigeon.

Fri 14th Jun 2019 - Frog Pond
Bottom of the Hill
17 Ruminator Sport 10m, 5 Good
Goey start, optional fist jam above, delicate finish. What's not to like?

Thu 18th Apr 2019 - Frog Pond
Tangarahu Rock
17 Fugly Sport 8m, 3 Average
Guide claims 16 which is definitely a sandbag, it's hardly easier than Kereru. Another tricky start, small sharp holds, tempting arete above.

15 Bite Me Gently Sport 8m, 3 Good
Ok, not worth 2 stars. Bit of a sun trap this side.

Sun 24th Mar 2019 - Pakeho
Main Crag
17 Trog Sport 25m, 10 Average
Grunty heave-ho at the start, then a bit dull. May have wandered too far right at the top, found getting back to the anchor tricky.

17 Hunny on my Paws Sport 22m, 6 Very Good
Mostly stayed off the slab and pootled around on the overlap which is fun, then took the left hand finish up the small groove. The top section is really good and may require a little bit of thinking in more than one spot. Claiming onsight for the alternate bottom approach and onsighted top. Not exactly a warmup.

Fri 22nd Feb 2019 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
16 Fuzzy Duck - with Gareth Hall Sport 18m, 9 Average
It's definitely not 15 Martyn. Spent a fair bit of time with a nut tool and stick levering off the big loose death flake near the bottom.

Sat 5th Jan 2019 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
16 Sugar Rush - with Tim Swain Sport 15m, 5 Average
Fairly dull. You can jam the start.

Sun 4th Nov 2018 - Kawakawa Bay
The Point
18 Road Tripping - with Angela Hewlett Sport 48m, 14 Very Good
Nice long slabby route, good moves, great exposure on the arete. Recommended.

Sat 3rd Nov 2018 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
19 Dirty Dancing - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m, 6 Good
Fun monkey dancing on good pockets out to the arete, crux getting onto the slab above.

16 Sweet 16s Not M16s - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 9 Don't Bother
Just what the world needs, more dull easy sport routes.

Fri 2nd Nov 2018 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
21 Hugs Not Drugs Sport 20m Good
First 22 onsight, maybe it's a little soft? Fun climbing, just enough features to keep it all together.

20 Sundowning Syndrome - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 5 Good
Enjoyable, but bolting seems a tad runout. Not sure how it is supposed to finish, left to top bolt of Jug Addiction, or right into top of Hugs not Drugs? Straight up over the bulge would be harder than 20 for sure.

17 Secret Squirrel - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 6 Very Good
Flows very well. Not sure about the L/R variants, we started left then drifted right to the arete after first bolt, that still seemed 17 ish.

16 Jug Addiction - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 8 Average
Straightforward jug haul, the routes to the right and left are better.

Fri 2nd Nov 2018 - Kinloch
Kinloch Crag (K1) CLOSED
15 From the Editor - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m, 6 Good
Better than it looks, also a bit harder.

Wed 31st Oct 2018 - Pakeho
Main Crag
18 Tiger by the Tail Sport 11m, 6 Very Good
Really a lot of fun. The steep groove is considerably easier than it looks, and the roof finish is great juggy fun, onsighted that. Think about the hand/clip sequence, then work your feet. Phil did Tiger it seems.

Wed 31st Oct 2018 - Pakeho
The Stone Steps
19 Dessicator Sport 10m, 4 Good
The tree has grown a bit, will take secateurs next time. Good balancy stuff.

Thu 12th Jul 2018 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier
17 Green Spot - with Grant Johnston Sport 16m, 5 Average
Yup, pumpy face climbing. Or we're just old and tired.

Sat 30th Jun 2018 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier
18 Out With The Boys Sport 15m, 4 Average
No easier than the 19 next to it. Both are soft.

19 Wild Country Express Sport 16m, 5 Good
Not bad. Pretty sure I've never been on it.

Sat 2nd Jun 2018 - Waipari
Main Cliff
18 Roadweary Sport 20m, 9 Good
Pretty sure I have never been on this. Sharpish holds, some high steps, not a soft touch. Possibly drifted a bit too far towards arete near the top.

Thu 8th Feb 2018 - Sheridan Hills
Flying Cow Buttress
17 Pani Para Chha Sport 15m, 9 Good
Thought I must have climbed this before but it would seem not. Really quite nice and better than Dead Cow or Pigs. Deserves a star if those get one.

Sun 17th Dec 2017 - Pakeho
Main Crag
16 Heffalump Trap Sport 18m, 7 Good
Pretty straightforward.

Sun 17th Dec 2017 - Pakeho
The Stone Steps
16 Tree Time Sport 10m, 5 Good
Harder than it looks!

Sun 17th Dec 2017 - Pakeho
Main Crag
15 Hunny Face Sport 19m, 7 Good
13 Pooh Corner Sport 18m, 7 Very Good
Nice, would go well on gear. Belay by Rosie and Ohm. Rosie climbed it too.

Sat 23rd Sep 2017 - Maungarei Springs
Lakeside Wall
18 Shooting in The Dark - with Grant Johnston Sport 10m, 5 Average
Overgraded, more like 17. One nice move on the arete.

Sun 5th Jun 2016 - Maungarei Springs
Lakeside Wall
16 The South Face Sport 12m, 5 Average
Getting a top rope up for Rosie.

Sun 15th May 2016 - Maungarei Springs
Pump House Wall
18 Glory Hole - with Grant Johnston Sport 10m, 3 Average
Mon 1st Feb 2016 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
19 Captain Caveman - with Angela Hewlett Sport 60m, 24 Classic
Great finish for the trip. Would say mega-classic if not so heavily retrobolted. 1st pitch a bit average but cave and top pitch are terrific. Led under time pressure mostly on gear with trad anchor below the chimney, used 2 bolts on P1 (still damp down low), 1st 2 on P2 (maybe some pro available), one before 1st overlap on P3 (probably pro but keen to move on). Top pitch more like fun 17-18 most of the way, engage your brain at the top overhang, sling the obvious thread then find the jugs. Wow.

Sun 31st Jan 2016 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
17 Pimple - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m Average
Grant took the dinghy out, we went looking for Peach Teats for Angela, who started up this until it quickly became obviously more difficult than 13. Also still fairly dirty. A bit crimpy here and there, not a lot to recommend it. Feeling pretty tired after yesterday.

Wed 23rd Dec 2015 - Cattlestop Crag
Footwear Wall
16 Fast Forward - with Anna Sport 8m, 2 Average
Should have been climbing more direct but shoes made it harder than it looked.

15 Sensible Shoes - with Anna Sport 6m, 2 Average
Appropriately in approach shoes. Easy. Most guides give it as 14.

Sat 12th Sep 2015 - Sheridan Hills
Flying Cow Buttress
20 Fire and Ice Sport 15m, 9 Good
Second ascent I think. Enjoyable, more sustained than Pigs In Space. Crux may be easier if you are taller than Bryce. Colin succeeded on top rope.

Sat 7th Feb 2015 - Kawakawa Bay
The Bluff The Lower Bluff
17 Jugzilla (Jugzilla P1) - with shichang, Angela Hewlett
1 17 lead by John Pitcairn
Sport 42m, 13 Good
A pleasant jug haul, join the queue. Just did the first pitch then abseiled into the second pitch of ThunderGod.

Sun 18th Jan 2015 - Waipapa
Main Cliff Galaxy Walls
16 Baby Driver - with Colin Megson, Angela Hewlett Sport 20m Very Good
Sat 17th Jan 2015 - Sheridan Hills
Western Wall
16 Chevre - with Angela Hewlett Sport 35m, 10 Good
Nice long cruise, expect a bit of lichen.

Sun 30th Nov 2014 - Waipari
Slug Wall
17 Snarf - with Angela Hewlett Sport 10m, 3 Good
Fun start

Tue 5th Feb 2013 - Motatapu Valley
Roadside Area Roadside Attraction
15 Strawberry - with Grant Johnston Sport 16m, 8 Average
Was aiming for Self Directed Learning Tool, placing gear, but took the (somewhat) cleaner exit. Really grubby at the top.

17 Shortcut to Exposure - with Grant Johnston Sport 30m, 14 Classic
Nice bridging in the chimney until halfway. Exit before the roof and move right then up, whereupon it starts to feel like some old Arapiles classic.

Mon 4th Feb 2013 - Wye Creek
South Side Main Wall
15 Indecent Exposure Sport 15m, 7 Good
I think this is the 15 we did.

Sun 13th Jan 2013 - Waipapa
Main Cliff Metaphysical Wall

If you can't layback, don't get on this.

Sat 12th Jan 2013 - Sheridan Hills
Chunderosa Buttress
18 Hannah Louise Sport 30m, 8 Very Good
Pretty easy until the end. Mind the gorse!
