Ascents by Wian van Zyl having Distinct route

Just thought I'd give this a burn on top rope while it was up. Had to take a rest halfway up. What a beast.

Incredible route, was belaying new people on the day so didn't have time for a lead send but even on top rope this was a gem.

Fun and varied climbing at the grade. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ah flip. I thought today would be the day we finally get on this.

A weekend of dogging 😂 this one caught me off guard. Its a good pumpy route. But that stopper move start is a mess 😂

Spoilers: off the rail there is nothing but that one foothold, match in the crimp just right of the draw and dyno out right to catch the next hold. Straight forward after that until you get to the big egg. Crimp on the right and the left of the egg then move out further left.

I though the egg felt too run out, quite scary.

Dogged again! I forgot how to do the crux 😂 such a good route. Roof to get you pumped, followed by a dyno/big dead point, then balance slab to finish.

Eep, pretty exposed route! Loved it, but it was more than I expected for my warm-up 😂 spoilers: it's blind but it's there!

Could not figure out how to get to the second bolt. Do you go far right along the crack then back left at the height of the second bolt?

Fun, bouldery. I think 21 if you climb along the bolts, felt 20 climbing along all the chalked up holds just to the right.

Must do if you're keen for short powerful route at grade 20/21

Oof, not sure about that grade unless you climb far left of the first two bolts. The rest is very soft.

Sad to say that I broke a foot hold at the bottom of the route I don't think its critical - I could still work the first few moves without the hold.

An easy (~17) to the upper crux (~21) of Minefield. Had to push hard at the end. Absolutely loved it. Note that I basically had to downclimb the route clean it.

A must do 18 at the crag. Slab into layback into overhang. Fun!

What a gem!

First 3/4 is brilliant (similar to Drop Zone but a bit harder). The end is pretty chilled. Well worth climbing.

It's a 17, didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised. The top is fun and creative and should be a nice challange if this is your grade.

Send on the second go.

Wanted to try something more chilled before main. Should have just gone to main. Its a good route in itself, but the area has more to offer. Clipping the anchor was a bit awkward and missed the onsight opportunity.

Its all about that technical traverse at the start. I think its worth doing at the grade.

Hmm, I'm not sure why this route has such a bad rating in the guide book. I thought it was a fun short bouldery route like many others at the crag. Grade seems fair but could be tricky if you're very short.

Solid 19. Like many of the other climbs around it, the rock quality at the bottom is poor. Pre-clip the first bolt if you can, the top is bullet hard, high quality climbing.

Felt right hard in 35 degree weather on a fun introductory outing with the family.

Save some juice for the end.

All round fun climb

Gave it one quick go at the end of the day. Got to come back for this.

Nice variety of climbing at a fairly consistent grade

Had to deal with a pocket full of water which is the last decent rest before the crux. I suspect that this may always be the case after rain. One of the best routes I've climbed.

As advertised, the bottom section of rock isn't great, but never felt unsafe and ended up being a very good climb over all.

The first few bolts are definitely worth doing. Very soft at the end though. The last bolt before the anchors is way off to the left - looks like rock is quite bad at the end.

Good fun. Throw a sling over the crack between the last bolt and the anchors to clip onto if it feels a bit runout.

Very thin. Above my pay grade.

Nice and consistent

Impressive climb. Some forced handjams, good rests and a dyno at the end (although I have seen it done statically/boring)

Oof, felt hard for a warmup! Some interesting forced handjams.

Pistolero took it out of me on the day and I was unfortunately just not up for the challenge. I'll be back.

A bit of a two-move 19 at the start into a 17. The crux can be CONSIDERABLY harder for short people. It is a fun problem but probably a bit overrated.

Vertical crimpfest. Absolutely loved it. Eases off towards the end.

Kind of found this easier than Zucchini. But similarly hard at the start and eases off past the third bolt.

Short and bouldery, maybe easier for tall people.

Maybe just not my best day, felt really hard. I'll come back, try again and maybe change my grade contribution, but for now 22.

Tricky overhang to finish. A nice little challenge at a beginner crag - definitely a 20.

Don't expect a challenge, this is about 2 meters of crimpy vertical 18 into a 15.

All round fun climb

Fun pumpy sustained climb. Look for the kneebar in the lower half.

Hard bouldery overhang into easy vertical climbing. Ends with a tricky little roof after a good rest. It felt very similar in style to Magic Potion at Lakeside (21) and harder than Rasputin (20) at the same crag - so my personal grade contribution is a 21.

Varied climbing, quite traddy. Went up the slabby section on the right - felt hard.
