1.1.1. Rókahegy 130 routes in Crag

Summary:
Mostly Sport climbing

Lat / Long: 47.591098, 19.034653

summary

Limestone quarry with a wide variety of routes.

description

Most routes are well protected but there are expections with long runouts so be careful. Difficulty ranges from 4a to 8a+ (IV to IX-) with most routes in the 4c to 6b range and only a few really difficult routes.

Since this is a former quarry, some parts can be unstable and rockfall is always an option so please wear a helmet.

Many routes have several names and "grades" so don't be surprised if different guidebooks show different information. Here we try to be reasonable and mostly stick to the most recent guidebook (Dunazug Szikláin) but with a few corrections.

Guidebooks / topos:

access issues

The quarry is located in an environmental protection area. It happens from time to time that climbing is prohibited at certain parts of the crag due to nesting birds but then the affected areas are usually well marked. Otherwise climbing is allowed throughout the year.

approach

It is located at the border of Budapest, right after leaving the city towards Üröm. Relatively close to the city, still easiest to approach by car. By public transport you may travel with H5 suburban and depart at Csillaghegy station. The crag is about 15 minutes on foot.

history

Many routes were opened by Lajos Rákosi (Pacal) and Gábor Babcsán.

Summary:
Bouldering, Top roping and other styles

Lat / Long: 47.543051, 18.991658

summary

history

Some short unprotected routes that would nowadays be given a boulder grading are historically graded in the UIAA system. A route like Őszapó tábla (UIAA 8-, 5 meters) for example would approximately be a Fb 6b boulder.

1.1.7. Végvári-szikla 13 routes in Area

Summary:
All Bouldering

Lat / Long: 47.489863, 18.941846

summary

A 7m tall limestone tower that hides in the woods. It is not a well-known place. Usually, there are no one at the crag, not even hikers.

description

It's a 7m tall dolomitic limestone tower. All sides can be climbed. You will need to climb/scramble down on an easier route as there is no walk down option. Due to erosion, the rock has a very unique formation - it contains endless holes and pockets from small finger-pockets to large caves.

The rock is NOT BOLTED! Although, there is one several decade old, rusty, peg at the middle of top but I wouldn't rely on it. Larger hourglass formations can be used on the top to set up a top rope system. But it can be also climbed as a regular boulder. Despite of the height it's still fairly safe as the harder parts of the routes are close to the ground.

access issues

-

approach

The rock can be located on Google Maps as 'Szent Mihály-szikla'. It's about 15-20 min of walking through the forest from the KFKI site, where you can park your car or get off from the bus, should you use public transportation.

summary

Well developed climbing are at the eastern side of Bükk, in Felsőhámor.

description

Well protected 6-40m high climbing routes on varied limestone rock formations - crack climbing, face climbing, overhangs, chimneys and slabs. There are almost 100 routes in the area with countless combination options, grades mostly reside between V and IX (UAII). Since this has been a well-known, easily accesible climbing area for nearly 50 years, the holds and steps on the most popular routes can be very polished. Because of this, some routes might feel hard for the grade. This is primarily a sport climbing crag with a few dry-tooling and some aid climbing routes. Multi-pitch climbing is possible on longer routes. Ice climbing is possible under the suitable conditions with the permission of the crag's governing body (http://www.hszjse.hu/). Being natural limestone cliff faces (not an old quarry like many other Hungarian crags) the rock is generally quite solid, apart from the rear sections of the two main cliffs. The crag is mostly made of the two obvious large cliffs: Kis Fal (Small Wall) and Nagy Fal (Big Wall). For further details, topos and rules (only in Hungarian) see the local governing body's website: http://www.hszjse.hu/hamor

access issues

Climbing is allowed all year long. During nesting time of specific bird species, climbing on certain routes might be prohibited. In such cases, notification is well marked at the route.

approach

The cliffs are literary next to the main road, on the two sides of the road. Parking is possible at Felsőhámor at unrestricted parking spots. Less than 5 min walk to the cliffs.

where to stay

Plenty of apartments around Felsőhámor, Alsóhámor and Lillafüred.

This white stone-mirror on the side of Jávor-hegy is unparalelled in Hungary.

description

There are about 20 well protected climbing routes on the 20m high, quite solid limestone cliff. Most of the routes are technically harder face-climbs, whit sharp edges, cracks and small holes. Also there are some easier arête climbs with exposed feelings and beautiful views. The routes' grades mostly reside between V and IX (UAII).

The crag has a unique microclimate. The south-facing, mirror-like, white limestone reflects back all the sunlight. On sunny days it is typically at least 5-10 degrees warmer than its surroundings. The place is way too hot during the Summer but ideal for late Autumn, Winter and early Spring outdoor climbing.

The Fehérkő lookout point is right at the very top of the crag. Watch out for falling objects thrown away from careless, ignorant tourists at the top!!!

For further details, topos and rules (only in Hungarian) see the local governing body's website: http://www.hszjse.hu/feher-ko

approach

Coming from Miskolc, turn left at Lake Hamor within Lillafüred. There are plenty of parking spots around the base of the chair-lift (lillafüredi Libegőpark) and at the Lillafüredi Sport- és Kalandpark. From here it is about 30 minutes of uphill walk to the East following the meandering path in the woods (this uphill walking can be omitted by taking the chair-lift). Once you reach the top, turn to the left and head towards the Fehérkő view point. Just before exiting the woods onto the open view point, head down to the left on the steep meandering slope that takes you to the bottom of the cliff. In total it is about 40 minutes of walking to the crag from the parking spots in the valley.
