Reaching a maximum height of 20m this outcrop provides a small concentration of generally steep routes which are really only of interest to local climbers. Any pegs and threads should be regarded as suspect and checked before relying on them. There are three separate areas:- Below the viewpoint/tarmaced lay-by Ivy Groove is a good Diff and Major's Wall a short sharp E1, through the gate in front of the pub are Little Job HS and the more challenging Odd Job VS, between these is the main wall where Dead Good HVS and Live Evil E3 are the most popular harder climbs.

approach

Approach via the B4371 from Much Wenlock. Parking is available in three individual lay-bys above the crag. The main wall is accessed from the lay-by just before the Wenlock Edge Inn. There is parking for several cars on the short track leading to the field above the crag. The pub cark park is currently blocked off and there are plans to build on it. Access to the belays on top of the main wall is along the cliff top through the trees and not over the fence. The routes on Job Buttress can be climbed by agreement with the National Trust and are worth a visit. Walk down the field above the main wall and through the gate in front of the pub to find this area. If you are up for adventure some routes have been climbed on the other side of the road opposite the Major's wall area. You will need a machete, strong trousers, a hard hat and a sense of adventure to enjoy them.

A gem of an area, but very little use. I found a Topo in 2006 and used it frequently, a wonderful place in the summer. Great for long mid week nights.

access issues

Pontesford Rocks form part of the Earls Hill Nature Reserve, A site of special interest, managed by Shropshire Trust for Nature Conservation. Whilst not wishing to prohibit climbing, the Trust is concerned that this should be properly regulated in order to preserve the reserve status of the rocks.

Follow the lower footpath, through the clearing and around the base of the woods to cross a large field reaching a gate at the entrance to Earls Hill Nature Reserve. Pass through the gate and turn right to follow the path up the scree slope. the path rises quickly to pass through trees at Fifty Foot Wall and continues upwards passing behind Pontesbury Needle to gain a clearing beneath The West Buttress. The clearing provides a convenient base camp and an opportunity to recover from the tortuous 15 min walk.

This expansive quarry offers a diverse selection of routes, catering to the preferences and abilities of a wide range of climbers.

access issues

Site is managed by Shropshire and Montgomery Wildlife Trusts and is a nature reserve. Climbing is allowed thanks to an agreement with the British Mountaineering Council.

approach

Llanymynech Quarry is situated in parallel to the A483 road, connecting the towns of Wrexham and Welshpool.

If you are approaching from the north, simply continue along the main A483 road until you reach the village of Pant. After passing the Cross Guns pub, take a right turn into Underhill Lane, approximately 100 meters ahead.

Proceed along the lane for approximately 100 meters until you reach an unmade section. Follow this unmade section, which will lead you to the parking area after another 50 meters.

If you are coming from the south, continue along the main A483 road as it takes you through the village of Llanymynech. Shortly after passing the Pant village sign, make a left turn into Underhill Lane.

Llanymynech Quarry is under the management of Shropshire and Montgomery Wildlife Trusts, serving as a designated nature reserve. It is important to adhere to the following guidelines:

• Climbing is prohibited in the Northern Quarry and on Asterley

• For organized groups intending to use 'Cul de Sac' quarry, it is advisable to contact the Red Ridge Centre in advance to ensure proper coordination and avoid overcrowding. You can reach them at (01938) 810821.

During this period, it is important to watch for signs indicating the nesting restrictions, especially in the Red Wall area. Please note that all routes on Foreigner Wall are permanently restricted. Additionally, seasonal restrictions apply to all routes on Red Walls between 1st March and 30th June.

The Brand is the name of the house owned by the Martin family. Over the years a very good relationship with the family has been built up with the local climbing community. This has resulted in there being no problem with people climbing providing they have contacted the family or their land agent, and been given permission.

access issues

Access is strictly limited to parties having permission to climb from the family. You should telephone first and follow the instructions given.

You may or may not be granted permission to climb; this is at the family’s discretion.

You will be asked to park at the house.

Climbers are asked not to destroy the excellent relationship that exists with the family by climbing without permission and leaving litter.

It is useless to trespass because the crag is plainly visible from the house.

The garden is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the rare lichen and fern species situated here.
