Summary

The incredible Vajolet Towers, best known for the 3 southernmost towers (Torre Delago, Torre Stabeler, Torre Winkler), have famous historical routes at easy grades.

Description

The Vaiolet towers are probably among the most photographed peaks in the Dolomites. In total there are ten summits, divided into two subgroups. The six northern peaks are much larger, while the four southern ones are thin needle spires.

They attract thousands of tourists every as well as lots of climbers; they are some of the most climbed peaks in the Dolomites.

A very popular Via Ferrata (Ferrata Santner) leads close to their base, and the the normal routes (vie normali) are pretty easy, coming in at UIAA IV/IV+. The Delago Tower is the Westernmost, the Stabeler Tower is the central one and the Winkler Tower the Easternmost. On the contrary the Northern Vajolet Towers are rarely frequented.

Approach

The Catinaccio / Rosengarten Group runs North-South and the Vajolet Towers can be reached from both sides.

Eastern access:
Gardeccia Park at Pera di Fassa, the road into the Vajolet Valley turns off to the left (west). Access is restricted. Hike up to Rifugio Gardeccia (~1 hour)

From Gardeccia take the Vajolet Valley upwards to Rifugio Preuss and Rifugio Vajolet. Here the steep ascent to Gartl at the base of the Vajolet Towers starts. The scramble is quite demanding but never exceeds grade I (there are cables in exposed sections).

Western access:
Rosengartenhütte / Rifugio Aleardo Fronza

Navigate to the hotel "Albergo Frommeralm", halfway between Passo Nigra to the North & Carezza to the south.

There is a lift to Rosengartenhütte/Rifugio Fronza delle Coronelle (€10/€14 return), or approx. 1 hour walk (3.2km, 700m vertical).

From here, follow the signs to the start of Ferrata Santner (5-10 mins). Do the Ferrata Santner (I/II grade, 1 hour), which takes you to Passo Santner & Rifugio Santner.

From here, follow the trail up the hill to Rifugio Re Alberto Primo/Gartlhütte (10 minutes). You access the southern Vajolet Towers from the Rifugio.

Where to stay

Eastern Access:

  1. Rifugio Vajolet OR Rifugio Paul Preuss --> Approximately 1 hour walk from the Vajolet towers.

Western Access:

  1. Rifugio Re Alberto Primo (Gartlhütte) --> An easy 10 minute walk to the base of the Vajolet Towers. Dinner & breakfast also available. Hot tip: if you ask nicely, you can bivouac (dusk to dawn) near Rifugio Alberto.

  2. Rifugio Passo Santner (Santnerpasshütte) --> About 10 minutes down the hill from Rifugio Alberto. A smaller hut, more expensive. You can often find a bed here when Rifugio Alberto is full.
