Description

Raw, untamed climbing on the beautiful Illawarra Escarpment.

Access issues inherited from New South Wales and ACT

If you have benefited from climbing infrastructure in NSW, please consider making a donation towards maintenance costs. The Sydney Rockclimbing Club Rebolting Fund finances the replacement of old bolts on existing climbs and the maintenance of other hardware such as fixed ropes and anchors. The SRC purchases hardware, such as bolts and glue, and distributes them to volunteer rebolters across the state of New South Wales. For more information, including donation details, visit https://sydneyrockies.org.au/rebolting/

Approach

Head East from Robertson down Lee's Road. After 1.3km on Lee's Road you will enter a section of the Budderoo National Park and there is a track turnout left to a small fenced lookout. Walk approximately 100m left along the cliff line to reach an abseil area.

Descent notes

100m left from the lookout there is evidence of an old rappel area (2 studs). Suggest using one of the two large trees for a rappel down (60m).

Whilst climbing out of the cliff is possible a trad rack is required and rock quality, especially on the descent route, is mixed. If unsure, leave your rappel line fixed and be prepared to ascend it.

Ethic inherited from Illawarra and Shoalhaven

Lots of bolts in this region. Most development has been done after the 1980s.

Grade Route

Starting at/in the bush, up to a mono-pocket and side pull then up to first ledge. Straightforward climbing then traverse out right to avoid the vegetation heap. Aid to top-out or rappel back down due to vegetation at top lip.

Bouldery first few moves to get over the ledge, then straightforward holds to a balancy mantle section then up and walk out.

Escape for Lee's Road (better than prussiking, maybe). Starts 50 m climbers-right of the rap in. Thorough bushbash to approach. Corner crack, most of the loose stuff has been removed. Might need a brush. Standard rack. Belay at the obvious tree; best to rope up for the walk off/second pitch.

Set: NW, TN, Jyah S & SOG, 2018

Sandstone chimney, right arete. Sit start, slots to delicate crimp and up. Sketchy fall zone.

FA: Jyah S & TN, 2020

Sandstone chimney, left variant, sit start. Crimps to rail and up.

FA: Jyah S & TN, 2020
