The Shey crag offers some of the best and most accessible sport (and some trad climbing) close to Leh.
This is a well-established sport crag which has some trad routes and potential for more routes to be established on granite rock. The crag is used by local guides to teach rock climbing. The crag also offers a foray into high-altitude rock climbing for those who haven't experienced it before. Make sure you're acclimitized at Leh before heading into the crag. The crag is at a slightly lower altitude (at ~3200m) compared to Leh (3400m).
The crag is approximately a 20 minute drive from Leh. There are a couple of ways to access the crag. The entrance to the crag is located at approximately 34°05'16.8"N 77°36'53.5"E along the Leh-Manali Highway. Take a left turn into the access road that crosses a canal and then turn left again and head towards the cliffs until you reach the gates at the fence. Park at the fence and then head inside which takes you approximately 5-10mins to reach the base of the cliffs.
If you're unable to access a vehicle yourself, there are a couple of ways to access the crag;
You can hire a taxi from Leh and coordinate with the driver to pick you up later in the day. Keep in mind that you will most likely need to guide the taxi using Google maps.
The other option is to speak with a local guide in Leh and organize a day out. Consider heading to Gravi-T gym at Leh and discuss with one of the folks there.
