Small but characteristic alpine lake, presents a couple of climbing spots frequented mainly by locals
description
The area surrounding Lake Orta has some rock formations, some well visible and some hidden in the vegetation. The area presents two main hotspots: mount Mottarone and the lesser known Madonna del Sasso cliff, both of which offer climbing on granite, with slabs and crack climbing. In these spots, the rock lends itself to be climbed in traditional style.

description
Sassi di Chiavolino, historically known as "Pera dla Volp", is a very small crag established in the 1950s, placed in a completely wild area, consisting of three micro sectors (with difficulties from 4a to 6a+), accessible via a marked path, with a short 15-minute walk.
The small crags are located in the upper part of the small town of Pollone, a real gem in the Alps, just a few minutes from the city of Biella (UNESCO creative city).
The sectors are divided as follows:
The Chiavolino crag was born as a climbing gym already used since the 1950s, in the 1990s it was re-equipped with stainless fixes by the mountain guide Gianni Lanza, with the support of Seba Biolcati, who over the years contributes to the cleaning and maintenance of this little paradise.

summary
The Orco Valley (Valle dell' Orco) is located in the Gran Paradiso National Park, which is situated to the north of Turin and west of Milan. This valley is famous for its gneiss crack climbing, which is said to be the best in the Western European Alps.
description
The epic big walls of Sergent, Caporal and the Torre di Aimonin provide long multi-pitch Trad routes, which can accessed with minimal walk-ins. The style of climbing involves plenty of splitter cracks, delicate slabs and some excellent face climbs across a wide range of grades. Generally the routes are well protected using trad gear such as cams and nuts, though the majority of the delays are bolted. Hence it is easy to retreat from routes if the weather closes in.
There are also many single pitch sport routes that line both sides of the valley around the villages of Ceresole Reale, Locana, and Sparone. This makes it easy to find the sun or shade depending upon the time of the year. The bouldering scene is growing as there are many boulders that litter the valley floor, particularly around the main campsite.
approach
The Orco valley climbing begins from the town of Sparone (~550m elevation), and continues all the way up the valley as far as Colle del Nivolet (~2641).
The main areas are:

ethic
Renowned for its incredible crack systems, there is a predominantly clean climbing ethic in Valle Orco.
Even so, there are a fair number of sport/bolted climbs in the valley. Talk to local climbers/guides before considering putting in bolts, bolts are permanent.
Some classics crack climbs, bolted in mania of sport climbing in the 80's/90's, have since had their bolts removed.
history
Climbing has been happening in Valle Orco since the early 1970's.

summary

description
The Monviso Massif is an area in the Cottian Alps with several peaks ranging between 2900 and the 3841m of altitude of Monviso, well known for its pyramid-like shape that can be seen from some distance. This area offers amazing hiking opportunity as well as a huge amount of climbing from classic trad to sport and alpine. The lower peaks host some classic long sport routes on vertical granite faces, recently revamped. The north faces offer some ice and alpine routes of international fame and popularity. The area is also full of "via normale" routes that can be used as a mean of safe descent but also as hiking routes to reach one of many peaks. Rock climbing season is between August and mid September, where all snow have disappeared from eastern and south facing walls and rock has settle.
approach
The huts of Giacoletti, Vallanta and Quintino Sella are the three main bases when approaching the climbs. They offer cheap basic accomodation alpine style when booked in advance but also offer camping opportunity, meals, toilets and phone. The huts can be reached by walk (2 hrs approx) from Pian Del Re (car park) but they are only open with facilities during the summer months. For the winter period (October to May) the huts are open with no facilities and a number of sheltered bivouacs are spread through the many passes and peaks, offering a good insurance against bad weather. Some shelters can be used only for emergencies: please refer to local guides or members of CAI at the huts, the association of Alpine Guides for detailed informations when planning.
