Ascents in Canyonlands Area

Classic memorable route up this unbelievably thin desert tower. Due to no suitable 4WD we chose the long approach via alcove spring trail (10km one way) but it was definitely worth the hike! Bypassed first pitch with the 5.8 traverse from the notch and cruised up.

Great day out in this quiet, remote, and beautiful place.

No option for aid. But this was certainly aided. Hugely sandbagged first pitch at 5.10 going on 5.11+, followed by some classy offwidth shimmy. Pitch 3 is another sandbag, heinously technical finger crack with no feet...but eases of and widens to hands, fists and stacked hands. Then a pitch of the chossiest of chossness.. seriously scary... and then the final face/arette pitch to the top. Also hard and very intimidating. All in all An awesome tower but you would have to be a solid 5.12 climber to expect to onsight this clean. Older tower ascents like this I believe it wise to take the grade with a tea spoon of salt. Definitely a tower worth getting after!

This tower has it all! Probably one of the most varied and enjoyable multis I've ever done. From chimneying and thrutching, to pulling on bomber chockstones to climb past an eye through the tower, offwidth to exposed and steep face climbing, ridge traverse and the final summit pitch being a beautiful tetchy face. Don't forget the rappel, even it puts on a show as you rappel into complete space and look straight through the washer woman arch. Wow. Went back and did it twice
