Ascents by Vanessa Wills having Distinct route

About all I had energy for after a few goes on debutantes. Great first move. The rock up top left me nervous.

Felt the need to stretch the muscles on something easy for a warm up.

Ok for the grade, and of historical interest

Well I at least I got up something today. Setting up top rope for undertaker. That didn’t go so well.

Much better rock quality and climbing than Bastion Buttress. Deserves a lot more attention. We started up cornerstone rib to gully where cornerstone heads left. Go back into alcove with crack at left side. This is likely the direct start. Instead go up slabs starting 3 m left, and after piton go up past another, and step airily right. Then 2 pitches of good quality chimney, no thrutching required. Belay at massive chockstone after first 40 m of chimney. Steps left at top of chimney and follow nice rock corner then easy 20 m scramble to top. Green glacier descent is very overgrown. Definitely safer to abseil from top chains. Traverse to third abseil station is overgrown and was hard to see ( I had to Prussic back up) .

Nice setting but pretty average route. Did something a bit harder on pitch 1, though Dave scored some good booty. Bail gear at 20 m, 3 wires, a sling and 5 lockers! I think this is overrated and an awful choice for people seeking an easy entry into Bungles climbing. Go and do Rib and Gully instead. According to the first ascensionists staying a bit right keeps you on better rock , but don't go too far right like the epic UNSW rescue from last year. Track in overgrown and walkers track off Bluff mountain also quite overgrown and could be hard to find in dark if you are unfamiliar with the area.

I forgot I hate offwidths when I started to solo this and had to get a #4 and a rope chucked up to me.

Quite interesting climbing, post fire a bit weedy and dirty, cleaned it as best I could and decided top roping everything else was wise

Led P1 and 2 together. Dave 3,4. Good except for the vegetated corner but started to forget it in overall fun experience

Down climbed at least half of this to get off after the horror of Slash

First pitch then went straight to finish up HP. The Rooflet felt slippery with the amount of stuff I was carrying out.

I think Dave did variant on P2 left of the actual line at grade 16/17, it was cobwebbed and no chalk, but quite good.

Would be well travelled and much nicer if it was at Piddington

More like a 16 in modern grades, carrots the whole way. David assures me it wasnt his hangover...

Exited right because I hadn’t read the guide and had to do all sorts of shenanigans across the gully and downclimb to DBB. The right exit was quite good though.

It was dry at least after torrential rain the previous day. Quite pleasant

FFA. Ok, though experienced blown footer first time up. Thank goodness for gear and attentive belayer!

Alt with Dave. It gets good for position and adventure. The first and second pitches were pretty vegetated and not good. In the top half I stepped across from the pinnacle to slab a bit earlier than suggested. The last “ 2 pitches” were much better. We did in two pitches total, biking from camp, only 10% chance of rain according to BoM, what possibly could go wrong! The approaching storm was very atmospheric.

Alt leads with Dave ( who is a pitch hog as he linked 1 and 2 and 4 and 5. ) however I got the best belay at the top of pitch 3 in the cave with amazing threaders. The climb took less time, and was far more pleasant than the descent- we went via Sedgies gully, not recommended.

Dave headed up this in error with only slings as runners. He managed to place two and was welcomed by a “ Gday mate” as he got to the anchor.

First climb at strange. Not overwhelmed by the place. Rocks nice though.
