★ Can't Stop the Grovel
![]() | 15m | Thu 12th Dec 2019 | ||||
A rather odd first ascent. After a long bush bash uphill to see Danny's promised high quality splitters, Darren and I had our gravest doubts confirmed by the appearance of this short, solitary offwidth.
Danny dealt with the offwidth but couldn't fit in the diagonal squeeze. Instead of bailing, he hand traversed off right and built an anchor, almost back on the ground a little higher up the gully.
I seconded up to the cave and decided to take a look at the squeeze. With Darren egging me on I entered the gravelly mouth, retreated, tried a little closer to the edge, with Darren laughing "this is the best possible thing that could've happened!" and made it through. Danny seconded the squeeze on the outside.

No way is this a 17
An impressive steep groove with lots of interesting bits and some especially tough vegetated V grooving on the 7th and 8th pitches. We started late and got caught in the dark, out of water, on the 8th pitch. I ended up aiding the move out of the belay cave, thinking I wasn't yet on the last pitch (the 8th pitch is 28m, not 48m). Then we couldn't find Geryon Camp and bivvyed in the forest on the valley floor. |

Start at the Pool of Memories and follow the cairned track north and around onto Geryon. Make sure to abseil off the chockstone at the South end of Foresight. (We abseiled off a bollard anchor and had to do traverse pitches). A #3 is very useful for the crux pitch. Cairns and then orange tape lead past the South Spur, down past a camping cave, down scree to Geryon Camp and back up to the Pool of Memories.
