1.2. Java 434 routes in Region

Summary:
Mostly Sport climbing

Lat / Long: -7.160177, 109.753672

description

Java is an island of Indonesia. With a population of over 141 million (the island itself) or 145 million (the administrative region) as of 2015 Census released in December 2015, Java is home to 56.7 percent of the Indonesian population and is the most populous island on Earth. The Indonesian capital city, Jakarta, is located on western Java. The island is administratively divided into two special regions: Jakarta and Yogyakarta and four provinces: Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java.

Formed mostly as the result of volcanic eruptions, Java is the 13th largest island in the world and the fifth largest in Indonesia. A chain of volcanic mountains forms an east–west spine along the island. Three main languages are spoken on the island: Javanese, Sundanese, and Madurese. Of these, Javanese is the dominant; it is the native language of about 60 million people in Indonesia, most of whom live on Java. Furthermore, most residents are bilingual, speaking Indonesian (the official language of Indonesia) as their first or second language. Java is divided into four provinces, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Banten, and two special regions, Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

Java is almost entirely of volcanic origin; it contains thirty-eight mountains forming an east–west spine that have at once or another time been active volcanoes. The highest volcano in Java is Mount Semeru (3,676 m). The most active volcano in Java and also in Indonesia is Mount Merapi (2,930 m). The area of Java is approximately 150,000 km2. It is about 1,000 km (620 mi) long and up to 210 km (130 mi) wide. The island's longest river is the 600 km long Solo River. The river rises from its source in central Java at the Lawu volcano, then flows north and eastward to its mouth in the Java Sea near the city of Surabaya. Other major rivers are Brantas, Citarum, Cimanuk and Serayu.

The average temperature ranges from 22 °C to 29 °C; average humidity is 75%. The northern coastal plains are normally hotter, averaging 34 °C during the day in the dry season. The south coast is generally cooler than the north, and highland areas inland are even cooler.[13] The wet season begins in November and ends in April. During that rain falls mostly in the afternoons and intermittently during other parts of the year. The wettest months are January and February.

approach

Most transportation modes in the country can take you to Java island, either by air, land or sea. Most climbing destination in Java sometimes located in a remote area. It is better to get there by personal vehicle or a combination of public transportation and walking.

Summary:
All Sport climbing

Lat / Long: -6.727798, 108.380614

summary

A small outcropping of limestone rocks, recently bolted in 2017.

description

Located inside a park/campground with a small pool, places for picnic and unfortunately loud and annoying music. The view is amazing. The rock needs a day or two to dry after rain. Some bolts are good, but most of them rosty and old. So be careful and check before you start climbing! There is a lot of moss on most of the routes and some are hard to reach because the start is overgrown.

access issues

Entrance fee to the park is 10.000 rupia.

approach

(-6.727722, 108.380833)

Three hours by train from Jakarta, two hours early morning drive from Jakarta.

From Cirebon train station, it's possible to hire a taxi to bring you directly to the location. It is about an hour drive.

Taking a public bus is possible just until "Balai Desa Paningkiran" and from there it is a nice walk through rice fields and forests for about an hour more to the rocks. There are several small shops on the way.

As you reach the entrance of the park/campground the rocks are visible. Just five minutes walk up the hill.

where to stay

Possible to pitch a tent on the grass in front of the rocks, or ask at the 'warung'/shops if you can sleep in their premise.

1.3.8. Padang Padang Beach 33 routes in Crag

Summary:
Mostly Bouldering

Lat / Long: -8.811484, 115.103435

description

Best boulders in Bali! Good quality limestone and some rock reef. All boulders are doable on the sand without crash bad. All kind of holds and jugs! Rebolted by Bryan titanium glued bolts.

Bolted routes towards the left section of the cliff 8-12m high. Plenty of bouldering all along the crag, which leads out towards the right. Lot of traversing with soft sand beneath for a safe landing. Better to climb at low tide otherwise you'll end up with wet feet, and soggy pumps.

Short, limestone wall with several vertical to overhanging routes. Rock can be wet and/or sandy, bolts are not top quality, and routes are mostly short, but challenging. Can also do some decent bouldering on this wall and some boulders in the area.

Video. Video.

access issues

Pay entrance fee to Padang beach.

approach

Crag can be seen from the tall bridge of Jalan Labuhan Sait (road near Uluwatu). Looking down to the beach and the surfers, the crag is on the left hand side; a large orange wall overhanging the beach impossible to miss. Park at the carpark on the road and make your way by foot using the narrow staircase carved out from inbetween a large crack in the rock on the opposite side of the beach.

Head towards Uluwatu from Denpasar or Kuta. Continue past the town of Pecatu and ask for Padang-Padang Beach. You can plug the GPS coordinates into Google Maps and it will also give you directions. You will cross a bridge that looks down over the beach, and there will be parking on the right hand side after the bridge. Go down the steps to the beach and the crag will be the obvious orange limestone wall on the left. Looks for the bolts.

1.3.21. Eiger Flagship Store 0 routes in Gym

description

The Eiger Flagship Store also has a large outdoor climbing wall, similar to the Badung Climbing Gym. When I went, it was absolutely deserted (probably because it sits out in the boiling heat every single day). Inside the Eiger store you’ll find a lot of hiking camping gear and the bouldering wall is located upstairs. Again, there were absolutely no people when I went ( about 2pm on a Tuesday ).

It costs 50,000 IDR for a 2 hour session. Just go to the front desk on the ground floor and ask to climb upstairs. It’s a very basic setup and the routes are nothing fancy. The wall is about 25+ metres wide and about 2.5 metres high. There are only about 3–5 established routes, which traverse back and forth along the wall.

You could easily create your own routes and have a bit of fun, which would be cool if you were with a group of friends. Otherwise, it’s really just a simple wall to have a good endurance session.

1.3.23. Bali Climbing Bouldering Gym Canggu 0 routes in Gym

description

This place is a tiny hole-in-the-wall kinda place. It’s relatively new to the scene and the first of it’s kind in Canggu. It’s really just a few bouldering walls and there aren’t many routes on the wall, but there are plenty of holds to experiment with. It’s the perfect kind of place to train as they’ve got everything you need for a good session.

The Bali Climbing website is surprisingly legit, given the fact that the place is so small. They have a solid setup but it really is just a small garage’s worth of walls. I wasn’t aware that they offered so much when I went there, but if you’re looking for some private coaching or guidance climbing outdoors then they might be able to help. Perhaps if it gets some traction and popularity then it might offer outdoor trips on a regular basis. At the moment the price for an outdoor excursion is 1, 250, 000 with a minimum of two people. The main walls

Entrance for a 2 hour pass will set you back 150, 000 IDR. That’s a bit steep in my mind, especially for Bali. They do offer “happy hour” prices from 11am to 2pm for 100, 000 IDR, but it gets seriously hot in the middle of the day.

This bouldering gym has a TON of potential. It’s a decent sized space with an upstairs section under construction and projected to be ready by Jan 2018. Until the gym opens properly in early 2018, the cost of entry is purely based on donations.

The downstairs area has a really solid variety of climbs from vertical to overhanging, including the gnarly cave section at the back of the space. I loved the route setting style as the routes had a really nice degree of technical difficulty to them. If you get chatting with the owners then you most likely would be able to help create a route or two if that’s what you’re into.

They are looking to get in a large batch of climbing shoes for hire as well. Once the place opens for good then you can expect an entry fee. This place is definitely worth checking out!

Summary:
All Trad climbing

Lat / Long: -1.009698, 110.328492

description

Batu Daya at an elevation of 958 metres is a mountain with huge potential for big wall climbing. Located in West Kalimantan surrounded by thick jungle and palm oil plantations. Apart from nearby palm oil plantation workers. Local nature enthusiasts and extremely adventurous international rock climbers very few people will even know about Batu Daya.

There isn’t much information online regarding rock climbing at Batu Daya. However, there is one article that provided some basic information on getting to Batu Daya. Apart from the article, there is a YouTube video by Indonesia Big Wall Expedition on climbing Batu Daya.

approach

(-1.008757, 110.324165)

6 hours by car to within sight of the mountain from Ketapang, or 8 hours from Pontianak. Lots of flights between Ketapang and Pontianak but some have a 10kg baggage limit. From Ketapang, follow the coast north to Siduk (90min) then take a right inland on a rough, dusty road across to the Trans Kalimantan road via Sungai Kelik. Once on the Trans Kalimantan road turn left (north) towards Pontianak until you reach the Sandai area.

Permits: Not required if you just want to take photos from afar, but rock climbers will probably have to pay for a traditional good luck ceremony conducted by local shamans prior to climbing. Apparently you need to request permission in Keranji village (30km away from the actual mountain) before staying at Desa Tunas Harapan itself which is just 2km from the rockface).

1.9.1. Carstensz Pyramid 1 route in Crag

Summary:

Lat / Long: -4.082311, 137.169689

description

The highest point on the island of New Guinea.

This remote, challenging summit has a long, very interesting climbing history starting with the Harrer party first ascent in the early '60's. A variety of routes have been completed in the ensuing years, although most parties use the original north face route for their summit bid. Access is an ever-changing problem. From year to year one can never know what the Indonesian government will impose on travelers seeking permission and permits. Expect surprises. For many years the peak was completely closed. Although it is presently 'open', that situation could change abruptly and without much notice. The extremely lucrative and desperately destructive Freeport/Grasberg open pit mine is visible from the peak and the grinding, crushing sounds of industrial activity are easily heard on calm nights. The proximity of the mine, its shameful history, and the huge sums of money involved have a direct impact on climbing and trekking access. Very recent press accounts indicate that a European group, primarily German, is in the initial stages of constructing a 'trekking hostel' at the base of the peak. Helicopter access and support would indicate the arrival of high end visitation to a heretofore remote, wild, and unique mountain realm. If it comes to fruition, expect costs for a Carstensz visit to skyrocket. Carstensz is limestone and due to the almost constant rain is weathered to a razor sharpness. It's good stone not friendly due to this weathering. Rain or snow can be expected for most of your visit. Though it's not unusual for a day to start with some blue skies for a few hours, the rain clouds will roll back in, never fear. Constant rain for days at a time would not raise an eyebrow. Snow on the upper mountain is also common. Due to the 'rough' texture of the rock, one can climb despite the downpours.

access issues

The political situation & logistics are complex. You are likely to encounter issues with local people on the approach trek, typically demanding a toll/royalty for walking through their village. It is possible your expedition company may demand more money from you on multiple days. If you try to fly to base camp to avoid these issues, apparently helicopter access is limited due to the local mine owning the majority of helicopter licenses available.

approach

In the Sudirman Range in the western central highlands of Papua Province.

A 6 day trek from the remote airstrip at Sugapa. The trek passes through several climates: jungle, swamp, moorland, alipne, rocky. It will likely rain often, so you'll need a full variety of clothing.

Options for getting to Carstensz vary year by year. One 'route' which is presently available involves flying to the interior village of Ilaga, and from there trekking for a week to base camp. One can also engage local helicopter services for an additional flight from Ilaga to a landing zone cutting that hike in half. The biggest obstacle will be arranging permits and negotiating whatever system is in place for interior travel at your particular time. The new 'hostel' is going to have an impact on future visitors, if in fact it is actually built.
