Giovanni Battista Piaz, known as "the devil of the Dolomites" because of the boldness of his achievements, worked as a mountain guide and opened a hotel-refuge on the Passo Pordoi. He shared climbing with Hans Dülfer † and was also a great friend of Paul Preuss †. Involved in political issues, he was imprisoned for a few months by the Nazi regime. He died at the age of 68 in a bicycle accident.
