High quality sport climbing on featured volcanic tuff.
Description
Although named for the iconic Piedra Parada or Standing Rock formation, the majority of the climbing can be found in a nearby canyon. The routes are well bolted and generally of high quality. The rock Is highly featured with an abundance of crimps, horns and huecos. Much of the climbing is technical in nature and gently overhanging with many power-endurance testpieces. With great camping options and short approaches, Piedra Parada offers some of the finest sport climbing in South America.
Access issues
A registration book can be found at the entrance to the canyon which can help the park authority in the event of an emergency.
Approach
<5 min
From the canyon's entrance station, walk through the winding canyon to find any of more than 35 sectors. Some are tucked away inside canyons, but most are quite easy to find using the details and topos in the guidebook.
Where to stay
There are two paid campsites nearby, as well as free camping on the south side of the river.
Ethic
Predominantly bolted, though a few trad routes exist.
History
Damián Benegas and Pablo de la Fuente first climbed the Piedra Parada in 1993. In the early 2000s, Martin Molino, Edu Depretis, David Brascó, Pera Vilarasau and Matoco Erroz - just to name a few - began to develop the first sport routes in the main canyon "La Buitrera". Accessibility eased in 2008 with the construction of a vehicle bridge, and later in 2010 the area was declared a National Monument. In 2012, Petzl brought its international Roc Trip festival and with it a boom in route development and popularity. Avid route developer Fernando Martín Molina published two guidebook editions Guia de Escalada Piedra Parada y La Buitrera, the latest being in 2014. Since, no other updated versions have been published.
