Ascents of The Lonely Sea

Really thrilling climbing! Rock definitely suspect on the first pitch but still super fun! Second pitch is the money with outstanding steep crack climbing making you work for it! Got kinda lost towards the end as the guide book was a bit confusing but didn’t miss much.

3 star route and a 4 star adventure. Like a dingy on the Tasman, we rode waves of jams up a sea of cracks that became more daunting the further from land, never quite knowing what the future might hold. Every metre was different from the last. The only certainties were that sideways rain makes you wet and the jams were good.

With some creative thinking and good old fashioned grunt work, we were able to please the crack gods with a top out. Their answer? A victory downpour.

Would I do it all again? Rain, hail AND shine.

(My advice - bring your best sea legs, a bag full of tricks and possibly a raincoat)

Avoid yanking on the chalked (??) loose block in the middle of the first pitch. Great second pitch, did it yoyo style. Lead it to the top after Sean handed me the lead. Tricky wide section. Rap anchor is on the left when topping out.
