Summary

Bouldering on the sea washed boulders of Crampton Island near Lake Tabourie.

Description

A spot for the desperate pebble wrestler on their Summer holidays on the crag starved coast south of Nowra. Crampton Island is a tidal island accessible by a short walk from the township of Lake Tabourie.

Access issues

Crampton island itself is part of the relatively new Meroo National Park however according to the map of the park in the Plan of Management the northern rock shelf is excluded from the park bringing it under the control of Shoalhaven City Council. This is the area which is currently being explored and developed however there is potential further around the island so hopefully climbing is included in the next update of the plan of management making climbing permissable on all parts of the island.

From a practical side of things as stated this is a tidal island which means that a bit of planning needs to go in to deciding when you head out there. It would suck to get there at High tide and not be able to get out to the island... It would suck more to get out there and then get stuck until the next low tide... It would suck even more if the next low tide isn't until some time after midnight.

Approach

From the carpark at the end of Beach Rd Lake Tabourie follow the beach access track and boardwalk beside the lake to its end from the beach walk on the sand out to the obvious island. Pay attention to the tides to make sure you can get out there and don't get stuck. Head north around the island to the obvious rock shelf and scattered boulders.

Where to stay

Camping in nearby National Parks and State Forests. Multiple holiday rentals in Lake Tabourie itself. Holiday Haven Lake Tabourie Caravan Park.

Ethic

On the north side bouldering is the only option. All other sea cliffs on the island are currently within the zone of a National Park that does not include climbing in its plan of management.

The original developers only holiday at Lake Tabourie biannually so unless others do some exploring it's likely additional routes won't be added until January 2025.
