Sandstone climbing in beautiful desert surrounds.
San Pedro de Atacama is in the far north of Chile, near the Bolivian border. Most tourists come to this area for the salt flats near the border on both sides, but plenty of opportunities exist for climbing and hiking too.
Locals may be hostile to climbing in this area, particularly near Tocanao. Please keep a low profile, pack out all trash and be respectful of the wishes of locals.
San Pedro de Atacama can be accessed by bus on the route 5 from any of the major cities south. It can also be accessed from Bolivia, normally as part of a salt flats tour.
Many hostels exist in San Pedro de Atacama. Tocanao can easily be accessed as a day trip, however camping is advised if climbing at Socaire
Both sport and trad climbing are prevalent here. Please consult with the locals before attempting to add any new routes.
