Draws on. Dodging showers. Probably went a little far left at the crux, but that's what squeeze routes get you.

Sun 17th Dec 2023 - Tukino
Mangatoetoenui Gorge Bowie Rickman Slabs
17 | ★★ Heroes - with Jonno Rau | 35m, 1 | ★ Good
Think Jonno strayed too far right, missed the spike, exited right instead of left. Getting hot and blowy, time to leave. Keen to return and lead it.
17 | ★★★ Potions Master - with Jonno Rau | 35m, 6 | ★★ Very Good
Nice lead from Jonno. Great route, reminiscent of Arapiles watchtower slabbing. Left the anchor in place for convenience.

19 | ★ The Exerstential Purple Thunderbolt - with Jonno Rau | 18m, 6 | ★ Good

Thu 11th Aug 2022 - Waipari
Animal Biscuit Valley Da Cave
20 | ★★ Zoomers - with Jonno Rau | 15m, 4 | ★ Good
Seems I've never been on this. I'd remember. Bastard hard start, very thankful for the stick clipped first bolt. Missed the good holds over the bulge to arrive on the slab surprised I was still on. High left foot rock up and right palm down over the top lip, worked well. Vague sense of accomplishment.
Sat 7th May 2022 - Wharepapa Rock
Owairaka Buttress | ||||||
21 | ★★ Forget Me Knot - with Jonno | 15m, 7 | ★ Good
Draws on. Grubby but climbable, monkeying around on a juggy overhang. Fun enough but feels a bit gym, and short. Would probably be more pleasing if cleaner. And not 21.
22 | ★ Haul Or Bawl - with Amy | 20m, 7 | ★★ Very Good
Draws on to crux after Amy had a go. Spent considerable time getting up, feeling around, getting down, repeat. In the end it was really only one or two tricky moves, and 4 people all found different beta. Mine kept the feet on and the body mostly upright. Quite fun.
Sat 16th Apr 2022 - Kawakawa Bay
The Point | ||||||
22 | ★★ Safety in Numbers - with Greg, Gareth | 30m, 14 | ★★ Very Good
Also bloody good. Started in a post-lunch coma but woke up pretty fast. Great slabby moves, fairly sustained at 20+ most of the way. Possibly 3 stars if it was cleaner, though it's clean enough if you trust the occasional lichen smear. Should have led it dammit, will be back for that.
Fri 15th Apr 2022 - Kawakawa Bay

19 | ★★ Bandar-log - with Greg | 18m, 10 | ★ Good

Sat 2nd Apr 2022 - Waipari
Bete Noire Wall | ||||||
17 | ★★ WorkSafe - with Greg, Bryce | 20m, 8 | ★ Good
Draws on. In for the 5th ascent, after Greg. Start is probably the crux, once you're on the arete it's plainer sailing and good fun. Nice moves to be had. Also, according to the crag, my 666th unique ascent...
Sat 27th Nov 2021 - Waipari
The Beer Garden | ||||||
21 | ★ Half a Lager - with Jonno, Max, Gareth | 10m, 3 | ★ Good
Draws on. Started a smidge right of the bolts in the shallow scoop, crossed left at break and bulge with a little pocket beta from Jonno. Maybe that's not how it's supposed to go, but pretty soft for 21? 20 at most, maybe even hard 19.
17 | ★ Behind the Line - with Jonno, Max, Paolo, Gareth | 15m, 6 | ★ Good
Draws on. After gorse working bee and in need of shade. Better than it looks.

18 | ★★ Not Dark Yet - with Grant Johnston | 25m, 13 | ★ Good

Sat 3rd Apr 2021 - Kawakawa Bay
Cracks Wall | ||||||
18 | ★ Sneakin' In The Backdoor - with Colin, Grant Johnston | 15m, 6 | ★ Good
Back for a proper go. Bouldery start then delicate moves up to meet Rohan's Little Sister. Think it's probably 18 unless you're supposed to crank straight up over the nose, which would be an eliminate. Adds a very worthwhile few metres.
Thu 11th Feb 2021 - Ōtepatotu
Main Cliff | ||||||
12 | ★★ Diploma - with Grant Johnston, Angela Hewlett | 20m | ★ Good
Crux is probably getting established in the V groove, or the top crack exit. Well protected.
Tue 9th Feb 2021 - Spur Road
14 | ★★ Magician's Birthday - with Angela Hewlett, Grant Johnston, Colin | 12m | ★★ Very Good
Good but goey at the crux, wouldn't be a pretty fall, a bit of a sandbag I'd say. You could call it 16 with a straight face. I jammed, Angela found some easier layback beta, but still...
Sat 6th Feb 2021 - Arawata Terrace
Lower Tier | ||||||
16 | Spoonerism - with Grant Johnston | 8m, 2 | Don't Bother
Draws on to roof. Can't see how you'd pull the roof at the grade, turned it on the left. No small amount of loose choss under it and dirty above it.

Magnum Wall | ||||||
16 | ★ Magnum - with Grant Johnston | 12m, 4 | Average
May have made it harder by not starting around the corner, went straight up. Draws on.
15 | ★ Wrong Way - with Grant Johnston | 6m, 2 | Average
Short evening session at the end of a rest day. Did it the wrong way, straight up the arete until 2nd bolt then right. Draws on.

Tue 2nd Feb 2021 - Hospital Flat
Kai Whaka Pai | ||||||
15 16 | ★ Chardonnay Bob (Unknown 2) - with Grant Johnston | 15m, 6 | Average
Think this is new, not in the 2014 guide. Somebody is being cheap, could use another bolt or 2 at the grade. There is another new route to the right starting on the stepped ledges.
18 | ★ Kai Time - with Grant Johnston | 18m, 6 | ★ Good
Not sure whether we were on this or Climb Into The Unknown. A hard start and some decent climbing after, but very poor bolting means you are looking at a groundfall from the crux between bolts 1 and 2, be careful, do not high clip bolt 2, belayer pay close attention. Grant came off...
16 | ★★ Friction In The Kitchen - with Grant Johnston | 15m | ★★ Very Good
Aesthetic thin crack that screams "climb me". Small but bomber gear, and the top is not runout if you have the right gear.
16 | ★ Unknown - with Grant Johnston | 16m, 6 | ★ Good
Not sure on the grade so top roped it first. Shouldn't have.

Wed 30th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Yacht Club | ||||||
18 | I’m A Motorboater - with Grant Johnston, Gareth | 12m, 4 | Average
Draws on. No chance of doing the direct, but sneaking left really feels like cheating.
Mon 28th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden | ||||||
15 | ★★ Miromiro - with Gareth | 30m, 13 | ★ Good
About time I climbed this. Yup it's 15 not 16, and pretty good but fairly straightforward slab climbing. Had a play on the top of Curious Kiwi on the way down, that seems reasonably solid 19.
Sat 12th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Yacht Club | ||||||
19 | ★ Sugar Daddy - with Gareth, Wade | 15m, 6 | ★ Good
Draws on. Stayed on face. Quite good but points off for retrobolting and squeezing ATGML and AA.
Sat 12th Dec 2020 - Kawakawa Bay

17 | ★★ Samurai Pizza Cats - with Gareth, Wade | 15m, 9 | ★ Good

Sun 25th Oct 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
Secret Garden | ||||||
20 | ★★ El Tigre Chino - with Grant Johnston | 20m, 8 | ★ Good
Draws on. A valiant near miss on the onsight by Grant. Crux is through the first 2-3 bolts, then it's all over.
Sat 21st Mar 2020 - Sheridan Hills
Chunderosa Buttress | ||||||
18 | ★★ Canard - with Gareth Hall | 25m, 10 | ★★ Very Good
How have I managed to avoid this for 10 years? It's pretty damn good. Looks like you could once keep going after the anchor but bolt on arete has been flattened.
Sat 29th Feb 2020 - Wharepapa Rock
Lower Tier | ||||||
20 | ★★ Klingons - with Gareth Hall | 23m, 6 | ★ Good
A long long belay session while Gareth worked it, so had a fair bit of pocket beta. Felt soft for 20, foot placement starting the crux is crucial.
Sun 23rd Feb 2020 - Kawakawa Bay
The Point | ||||||
18 | ★★ Bi-Curious George - with Gareth Hall | 32m | ★ Good
Nice cleaning job Gareth. LH start, good moves on the arete, similar feeling to P1 of After The Sunset. 19 is a bit of a stretch I think, LH is 18. Incoming rain drove us back to camp.

Organ Pipes Area Organ Pipes Gully Organ Pipes Gully Right Side
19 | ★★★ Lemmington - with Anna, John Henry | 30m | ★★★ Classic
Not quite onsight, had seen ShiChang’s monster plummet a couple of years back and took a look at the top from the anchors opposite. Why had I been putting this off? Much softer than expected, the crux traverse and headwall flow nicely and there is plenty of gear. I think Aardvark is harder on lead, but this is a beautiful climb.
Thu 17th Oct 2019 - Arapiles
Organ Pipes Area Organ Pipes D Minor Pinnacle
18 | ★★ Aardvark - with John Henry | 18m | ★★ Very Good
Huh. Not as hard and strong as it looks, rewards good footwork. Back on the list for a lead.

Thu 12th Sep 2019 - Waipapa
Main Cliff Millenium Wall
14 | Thirsty Boots - with Travis | 12m | ★ Good
Not bad. A bit slimy down the bottom right now so the start is harder than 14, will be an easy clean next summer. Perfect fists for me, take a couple of #4s. The remainder was mostly hexes. Linked into Dog's Breakfast.

Sat 31st Aug 2019 - Wharepapa Rock

18 | ★★ Space, The Final Frontier - with Gareth | 23m, 7 | ★★ Very Good
Never thought this looked all that good, but it is. Don't get sucked left too early in the scoop, and save some oomph for the final layback in the enticing high dihedral.

18 | ★★ Calcium Snow | 23m, 10 | ★★ Very Good
Pretty damn good, keeps you thinking a bit. Seems I read the moves through the middle section better than Phil, found it not too pumpy. Runout above the roof but much easier climbing.
17 | ★ Hunny on my Paws | 22m, 6 | ★ Good
Quite good but mossy at bottom. Bring a brush next time ... clipped the anchor and straight into Tiger by the Tail.

Nervy balancy wee number in places, sketchy top out. Maybe we were too far left but the arete was pretty green in the first half.

17 | ★ Atomic Rooster - with Grant Johnston | 10m, 2 | ★ Good
Better overall than Frenz, and the bottom moves are harder especially if you stop to get a high piece in before committing.

16 | ★ Bonne Anne (Bonne Annee) - with Grant Johnston, Tim Swain | 20m, 7 | ★★ Very Good

Bloody great, cool crux moves with beta from Frankie.
19 | ★★ Sideshow - with Anna | 35m | ★★ Very Good
Not my idea of a first climb for the trip warmup but proved easier than expected. Nice knee bar before crux. Will return to lead.
Sat 27th Jan 2018 - Sebastapol Bluffs
Javelin Wall | ||||||
17 | ★★ Javelin - with Grant Johnston | 30m | ★★ Very Good
Really good and worth the approach (we came in left). A dicky but adequately protected move or two on finger locks across an exfoliating slab to get established in the crack (crux), then interesting features, a wide range of gear and some good jamming. Possible dodgy block at the top overlap, make up your own mind. Recommended. Ran out of evening but will come back for Five Ring Circus which looks fun.
Fri 26th Jan 2018 - Sebastapol Bluffs
Twin Cracks | ||||||
21 | ★★ Ethical Debate - with Grant Johnston | 18m, 4 | ★ Good
The name perhaps refers to it being a squeeze route, easily escapable into the routes either side. Pretty crimpy, tiny feet and smears, really hot rock by late morning, considerable ooze required. Surprised I got it clean.

Nice thin sequence at the crux, eases considerably after that.

18 | ★★ Sylvie’s Blast Hole - with Grant Johnston | 11m, 4 | ★ Good
It's either overgraded or a bit contrived (if you aren't supposed to jam the obvious crack) or both, but quite nice. Would go on gear.
