Freyr offers about a dozen sectors of very varied, high quality limestone, all within walking distance of one another and among which Belgium's highest climbable rock face. An-all around-crag.

Freyr is the biggest and most prominent climbing crag in Belgium, offering pretty much everything a climber can desire from any limestone crag: multipitch climbing; slab, vertical and overhang climbing, a great atmosphere and easy sleepover facilities. Ideal for weekends or even longer periods of intense climbing. Freyr is immensely popular and arguably pretty harshly graded, so many of the easier routes have become pretty polished but remain nevertheless real classics.

An updated edition of the guidebook has been released in the fall of 2022.

access issues

As crag maintenance and renting costs are borne by the local Club Alpin Belge (CAB), membership from a recognized climbing association is required (controls of membership cards are frequent).

The crag is sandwiched between the river Meuse and the township of Freyr, just South of Anseremme. There is a designated parking spot (exclusively for climbers!) on the South edge of Freyr.

Alternatively leave your car in Anseremme and walk along the Eastern bank of the Meuse to reach some easy sectors after 10 minutes (Carrière Synclinale, Dalle Ecole and Fissures Georget) then the bottom of Merinos (additional 5 minutes).

Reaching Freyr by public transport takes roughly 2,5 hours from Brussels (train stations in nearby Dinant or Anseremme + unfrequent bus service towards Beauraing).

where to stay

Climbers are allowed to spend the night in the designated CAB campsite, about one minute walking from the parking spot. Tents can only be installed between 6 PM and 10 AM. Expect a very inviting atmosphere, with dozens of climbers spending the night on weekends - it's ideal terrain for tents or hammocks and it's allowed to make bonfires in the designated fire places. CAB or KBF members (Belgian federations) are to pay €2 per night, others €4. There is also a refuge, a small barrack offering shelter to about 24 people (€4 or €8 depending on your membership status). The local terrain manager will collect the money in the morning, and if not you are kindly requested to leave the correct amount in the managers letterbox (next to the refuge/shelter, tagged 'gardien').

Climbers looking for a more comfortable stay can stick to one of the many hotels, hostels or bed and breakfasts in the area.

Setting up new routes or retro-bolting in the area is not allowed without permission of the CAB.

Please reduce your use of chalk to a minimum and remove tick marks when done.

Using trad gear to improve route safety is allowed.

Many routes in Freyr have a top-out finish - please do not install top ropes on these routes.

Rappelling down is only allowed in case of an emergency.

Freyr is situated in a designated Natura 2000 site. It's a nature reserve: the place is pretty clean, keep it that way or clean up any thrash you come across! Some routes can be tagged with a red-and-white ribbon, which means the endangered Peregrine Falcon nests along the route, so please don't climb that route that time.

Do NOT cross the railroad. People have died here already, and it will obviously lead to the authorities closing the site. Getting to the bridge where the access path starts is only a 2 minutes walk.

The site is managed by the CAB (Club Alpin Belge) and access is limited (check their website).

(50.325218, 4.975757) Parking by car is only allowed on a flattened area outside the last 180° bend before reaching the hamlet Chansin on the road from Dorinne to Durnal. The crag is reached by following the road downhill, then a gravel track to the left when level with the train station. Cross a small bridge over the stream, then go up a few wooden steps on the right 50m before the tunnel.

You'll find a number of beautiful rocks where you can go for a relaxing climbing day. Not terribly difficult routes, but a hundred accessible to very accessible routes.

The castle on the camping is in use by Mountain Network, a Dutch climbing organization, so you will see many larger groups learning to climb.

All crags are located inside the private property of the nearby Hôtel du Castel. Hence, access to the climbing areas requires registration at the hotel reception desk (send one member of your group) and is restricted to members of climbing associations having an explicit agreement with KBF. Niettegenstaande kan en mag je hier voorbijrijden en onmiddellijk links je wagen parkeren. Er zijn een 10-tal plaatsen beschikbaar tussen de 'betonnen' blokken. Het is enkel langs de kant van de muur dat je mag parkeren. Zijn deze plaatsen bezet dien je je voertuig in de gelijkgrondse berm op straat te parkeren aan de overzijde van domein 'Moulin'.

Het is dus zeker niet de bedoeling in het gras te parkeren tegenover de parkeerplaatsen, er te overnachten en/of de graszones als speelweide te gebruiken of om te picknicken! Wij vragen met aandrang deze regels te respecteren om in de toekomst de mogelijkheid voor de extra parkeerplaatsen te vrijwaren. Alle aangrenzende zones zijn privéterrein, dus blijf er weg. Mensen die de regels niet respecteren zullen zonder meer verzocht worden hun voertuig te verplaatsen."

There's a road and a parking on spot. From Landelies, follow the river north to the quarry entry. If the road is closed, you can park at the entry and walk in - there is a forest path to the right which will let you avoid part of the quarry.

Small but interesting patch of limestone rock. Most crags are within a military area and are therefore not accessible on weekdays.

Consists of multiple rock faces with routes going from some easy routes of the 4th grade to a hard 7 grader with finger pockets. The limestone has been pretty weathered and worn out by intense climbing but still offers a great experience. Well-bolted and safe. There is also a long via ferrata and the possibility to do multi-rappels and multi-pitching (TBC?).

The latest topo is ten years old, and mostly sold out. The last copies are available here.

access issues

Most crags are located within a military area. Those crags are not accessible on weekdays, are restricted to members of a limited number of climbing associations and require registration at the entry gate.

Follow Rue Notre Dame de Vivier down South until you almost hit the river, park at the bend in the road and report to the military office next to the gate.

Avoid overusing chalk. When toproping, place your rope in a carabiner to limit wearing out of anchor points.

Het hoofdgedeelte is een nauwkeurig recht uitgesneden blok met een aantal wanden eromheen. De routes zijn allemaal boulderroutes, alhoewel het niet duidelijk is waar deze moeten zijn.

Er wordt hier geklommen, de haken zijn soms oud, soms nieuw. Er zijn een stuk of vier behaakte wanden, en dan 1 route per wand.

De locals rijden stomweg de groeve in en stoppen op het grasveldje naast de oude bunker. Mensen die graag de lak van de auto heel houden zetten hem ergens langs de geasfalteerde weg.

Vanaf (de afslag50.068264, 4.388435) het bos in. Houd direct links aan, ga daarna rechtdoor tot aan het weiland. Rechts kun je parkeren en na twintig meter het bos inlopen sta je bovenaan de rotsen. Je kunt ook 1 "kruising" voor het weiland parkeren op de overwoekerde afslag naar rechts. Ga je daar naar beneden, dan kom je onderaan de rots terecht.

Let op: een van de kaartjes van Escalade en Belgique lijkt niet te kloppen - die stuurt je de naastgelegen groeve in. Die heeft overigens ook een flinke wand.

Zo'n tien meter achter Chaussee de Gramptinne 4 loopt een bospad. Na een meter of twintig wordt dit een vaag paadje. Zodra je door de minigroeve bent zie je linksboven een lange rots opduiken.

Op het moment van schrijven wordt er aan het pad gewerkt, waarschijnlijk in verband met de overstromingen.

Dit is privégebied en de eigenaar wil duidelijk niet dat hier mensen komen gezien de hoeveelheid bordjes, hekken en prikkeldraad.

In de grot worden regelmatig kampvuurtjes aangelegd en er hangen setjes aan het plafond. In de hekken zitten gaten en het prikkeldraad is doorgeknipt en vertrapt.

Aan jou de keuze of je hier gaat klimmen.

1. Door een (oud hekje50.221457, 4.913926) kun je met een pad naar boven.

2. Vanaf de parkeerplaats van Castel de Pont à Lesse gaat een wandelpad naar het zuiden en dan naar het oosten naar de trou. Hiervoor moet je door een gat in een hek.

Aan hetzelfde stukje weg ligt nog een mooie grot, die wordt niet door klimmers maar door speleologen gebruikt.

Het grootste klimgebied in de regio

De grote trekker, de grot, is helaas gesloten. Het staat er vol bordjes en hekken, het is echt serieus dicht. Wat overblijft is een grote plaat en wat "divers" hogerop.

Er is een flinke hoeveelheid topo's te vinden. De meeste gaan over de grot en zijn nu niet nuttig. De rest van het gebied is door de jaren heen voorzien van net iets andere routes, net iets andere routenamen, net iets andere haken, en eigenlijk kun je het beste maar gewoon gaan en zelf daar kijken.

By tradition, every spring, an Eurasian eagle-owl makes himself cozy again in the quarry. After the first sighting the climbing crag is closed.

• 2024: closed from the 23th of February (KBF news)
• 2023: closed from the 31st of March
• 2022: closed from 11th of April
• 2021: closed from 29th of March

When a nest is formed nearby, Flône remains closed until the 30th of June and occasionally longer (e.g. in 2023 the crag closed again from the 1st of August 'till the 1st of September).

Par tradition, chaque printemps, un grand-duc se réinstalle confortablement dans la carrière. Après la première observation, la falaise est fermée.

• 2024 : fermé à partir du 23 février (Actualités KBF)
• 2023 : fermé à partir du 31 mars
• 2022 : fermé à partir du 11 avril
• 2021 : fermé à partir du 29 mars

Lorsqu'un nid se forme à proximité, la Flône reste fermée jusqu'au 30 juin et parfois plus longtemps (par exemple en 2023 le rocher a de nouveau fermé du 1er août au 1er septembre).

Een mooi stuk muur met een aantal goed aangegeven en behaakte routes. Helaas wordt het hier ook gebruikt om oude troep te dumpen, maar het klimgebied zelf is schoon. Verder naar achteren wordt de muur hoger maar viezer. Hier is nog niet geklommen.

Routes met stippellijntjes zijn onduidelijk.

Van bovenaf: (50.680562, 5.672657) tegenover het mijntorentje (zie foto.) Ga hier links langs naar beneden (rue Heyée.) Ga door de rood-witte voetgangershekjes en loop na een meter of tien rechts van het pad. Je staat nu bovenaan de rots, loop er rechts langs om het pad naar beneden te vinden.

Van onderaf gaat helaas niet meer, alles zit vol hekken met "privé" bordjes.

Along the N61 Verviers-Limbourg, cross the Vesder at Renoupré. After the bridge, turn right and in the next bend drive into the cul-de-sac. Park at the end and take the path on the right (50.603922, 5.893416). After two minutes you can see the first rocks on your left, the sectors of the Grotte are 200 meters further on along the water.
