Summary

Welcome Springs is mostly known for The Cathedral and Wailing Wall, but there is much more to do. Vertical and steep climbing on excellent limestone, mostly in harder grades and in the shade.

Description

Most sectors offer hard climbing on vertical and steep limestone of excellent quality. Many routes have fixed draws and are closely bolted. The main sectors are in the shade most of the day. Access to the Wailing Wall, the Cathedral, Anti-Theme Wall and Meat Market require short passages on fixed ropes or ladders which might be challenging for dogs.

Approach

Coming from St. George (UT) on the Old Highway 91 take a right just after milemarker 5 (there is a sign for "Big Cottonwood Game Ranch"). Follow the good dirt road for about 3km and take a right (you might see a sign for "Welcome Spring Pipeline") and drive another 3km to the end of the road where there is parking at a corral. Not many places are flat. Hike up the path along the wash to your right. You will cross a fenced-off area, turn left after the second fence and follow the wash, you will see the first cliffs on your right and left. Continue hiking to the sectors. The main sectors (Wailing Wall, Cathedral) are accessed by a well marked trail going up steep to the base.

Where to stay

You can camp next to the corral, there are no facilities and please pack-in what you pack-out.

Ethic

An excellent guidebook for this area is the Limestone Bible by Misty Murphy and Bill Ohran
