Summary

Surprisingly good sandstone in the shadow of the Cordillera Real.

Description

Peñas is a small village close to La Paz. It has a really good Climbing Park, for sure one of the best in Bolivia. Here are living an Italian Priest and some volunteers that are working in a lot of social projects. One of these projects is for the tourist development of the small village, with the dream to create work possibilities for the families and for some young. Actually in Peñas there is the possibility to climb, do Via Ferrata and climb some mountain in the Cordillera Real. Climbing is located in 2 small valleys behind the church and school on various cliffs with different orientations which allows you to play the sun. Sector names are indicated with wooden signs and paths are well marked. There is also a small via ferrata and zip line park with some activity on the weekends and a small food stall with good food and drinks at the entrance to the climbing just after the school (coming from the main square), open on weekends.

Access issues

Many of the crags are located behind private land. Please try to access them using the designated paths.

Approach

Peñas is just about 50km from La Paz and can be reached by bus / colectivo. Check in at the Cafeteria on the main square to buy the guidebook and get latest beta. From the main square you can reach all sectors easily by walk. The main areas are accessed from behind the school (walk back in direction La Paz). Check the individual sectors for details on the approach.

Where to stay

There two hostels on the main square (price 40bs) and a nice cafeteria (open on weekends). There is also a Hotel, with private room and bathroom if you need more confort (price 100bs). You have also the option to camp behind the hostal with the free use of the bathroom and shower (price 10bs).
